If you visit the picturesque town of São Vicente, make sure to visit the main Church. In its interior, you can see a beautiful painting of São Vicente blessing the town and a lavishly decorated altar.
Another important monument in this parish is the small chapel of São Vicente built and carved into the basalt rock, in the mouth of a stream that crosses the town. It is also here where the volcanic caves and the Volcanism Centre are located.
It is said that São Vicente owes its name to the numerous crows that lived there when the first settlers discovered it. The birds reminded the colonists of the Spanish martyr São Vicente, whose remains were defended by one of those birds.
