Embroidery and Handicrafts Museum
This fascinating museum tells the history and origins of the beautiful and world famous Madeira embroidery.
Located in Rua 5 de Outubro in Funchal, the Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute of Madeira (IVBAM) displays pieces of embroidery that trace the evolution of this craft. They are now considered relics, but they were produced in the island for over 150 years.
In this space, IVBAM sought to preserve the historical value of this dying secular art that has been an important part of the economy, culture and social life of the island from the second half of the nineteenth century and during in the first decades of the twentieth century. The space also seeks to pay tribute to the embroiderers whose meticulous craftsmanship is responsible for the quality and beauty of Madeira Embroidery.
