Flower Festival
Land of lush vegetation, it was inevitable for Madeira to celebrate the flower, which it does in mid spring. The Flower Festival was first celebrated in the twentieth century.
The event soon became a favorite of the local public and tourists. It consists of fabulous floral displays, music and a wonderful parade through the streets of the capital of Madeira with floats decorated with natural flowers and fairy tale costumes.
Inherent to the Flower Festival, there is a message of love and respect for nature and people. No wonder that the event features a “Wall of Hope” in the Largo do Colégio, across the City Hall of Funchal. This wall for peace is used by children who place flowers on it that symbolizes hope for a better world.
This event also encompasses other activities. Among them are carpets of natural flowers along the central island of Avenida Arriaga, the awarding of prizes for the best showcase, an exhibition of flowers, and the 'Flower Market' where you can buy or enjoy plants, as well as performances by traditional music groups, classical music concerts, and other performances.
