Wicker Toboggans in Madeira Island
If you like adrenaline don't miss the chance to take a ride in the wicker toboggans, between the beautiful village of Monte and the more cosmopolitan Funchal. You'll reach speeds of up to 50 kms per hour along a slope 2 kms long. The cars are made of wicker mounted on wooden runners and pushed by skilled men, known in Madeira as 'carreiros'.
They are dressed in white with typical straw hats. They will safely guide the sleds along the steep “Caminho do Comboio”.
The tradition of these wicker sleds dates back to the nineteenth century, when this was the fastest way to reach downtown Funchal from Monte. With the arrival of modern transportation, the sleds became a thrilling ride and an unforgettable experience for visitors.
