São Gonçalo
The view over Funchal is, beyond any doubt, one of the major attractions of São Gonçalo. Some even head to this parish to watch the beautiful pyrotechnic show that makes Madeira a unique destination at the end of the year.
It is in this parish, established in 1558, that is located one of the most popular viewpoints of the city: the Miradouro do Pináculo or Neves. Located 283 meters above the sea level, this promontory provides a dazzling view over the bay of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean.
São Gonçalo is also where one can play golf. The Palheiro Golf, located here, has been in operation since 1993 and is privileged with fabulous views over the city and the bay of Funchal.
In this area, you can also visit the local church, built with basaltic rock, and admire a sculpture of the Virgin carved in 1914 by Francisco Franco. This is a beautiful church with a simple rectangular shape and multiple arches in its interior.
