Santa Cruz, in addition to being the county where the Madeira International Airport is located, is also a modern city, blessed with magnificent beaches, two nature reserves – Garajau and Ilhas Desertas, excellent hotels, and delightful restaurants. There are many cultural events throughout the year. This municipality has the advantage of being located about 20 minutes from the capital of Madeira.
If you love diving, here you will find just the right conditions for the sport, in the Garajau Natural Reserve, in the beaches of Reis Magos and Galo. Speaking of the beach, the bathing complex of Praia da Palmeiras, Ribeira da Boaventura in Santa Cruz and Reis Magos in Caniço are excelent options for relaxation. If looking for more fun, try the water park, which has an extreme sports area with water slides, rapid water, black holes, aqualand pools, slow rivers, and other activities.
The panoramic view from the Cristo Rei viewpoint in Garajau is also worth experiencing. Enjoy a visit to the beach, situated in the natural reserve and accessible by cable car.
As an alternative to the beach, Santa Cruz also offers the opportunity to enjoy golf and horse riding. In Santo da Serra, you can practice both activities. Visit the Santo da Serra Golf Club, built in 1937, and let yourself be carried away by the breathtaking scenery. Santa Cruz offers some popular events such as the camps of Santo Amaro (in January) and São Pedro (in June). Throughout the year in the House of Culture in Santa Cruz, cultural exhibitions showcase the works of several regional and national artists.
Situated on the south coast of the island of Madeira, in 2015 the county of Santa Cruz is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It covers an area of approximately 81.5 km2 and comprises five parishes: Caniço, Camacha, Gaula, Santa Cruz, and Santo António da Serra. Have fun discovering the peculiarities of each place.
