Levada Walks

Madeira Levada Walks

Madeira is known worldwide for its nature and its "levadas".

“Levada walking” is indeed a stunning experience!

There are routes to suit all tastes: from the shortest to the longest, from the most challenging to the easiest.

Before venturing out along a "levada", know that these irrigation channels extend across the whole island, in a network of about 2150 km total length. They were ingeniously constructed many years ago, through the basaltic mass of the island to transport the irrigation water. However, these tracks present some dangers: you should never overlook your safety.

Make sure you are accompanied by specialized staff and use proper equipment. The region has several hikers associations and tourist companies that are dedicated to these activities. In addition to the shoes and appropriate clothing, we recommend that you bring along a hat and sunscreen as well as a waterproof jacket and a map. Drinking water, a torch and some snacks to eat are also advisable. Always stay contactable.

Having taken all the precautions, go for a nice ride. Marvel at the lushness of the Laurissilva Forest, the biggest in the world, recognized by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage. Also cool off in the small ponds found along the way, enjoy the waterfalls and indulge yourself with the chirping of the birds.
