Santa Catarina Park - Madeira Island
The Park of Santa Catarina is located in the centre of Madeira's capital, close to the central square of Avenida Arriaga. It is one of the nicest parks in Funchal. This space is large and has a playground, a snack bar, a small lake and has beautiful vegetation. It is a romantic and quiet place where one can enjoy amazing panoramic views.
Inside the park you will find a chapel dedicated to Santa Catarina, ordered to be built in wood in 1425, by Mrs. Constança, wife of the Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco. In the 17th century, the chapel was rebuilt in stone, which gives it a lyrical air.
A little beyond the Santa Catarina Park, be sure to visit Quinta Vigia, a beautiful space which is the official residence of the President of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The property is visited often thanks to its fantastic gardens and its lookout point which offers views from the Funchal bay to Garajau in Caniço.
