Estreito da Calheta
To get to Calheta from Funchal, take the highway towards the town of Ribeira Brava and follow the signs towards Calheta and Estreito da Calheta.
In this quiet village, you will notice the manually crafted agricultural landscape, with a predominance of vineyards and cultivation of potatoes and bananas. In times gone by, Calheta was of great importance to the culture of the sugar cane, which is still used in the making of regional brandy.
This parish, which was established in the second half of the sixteenth century, has a beautiful parish church where one can admire a picture of its patron saint: Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace).
In Estreito da Calheta, you can also visit the chapels of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, Nossa Senhora da Conceção, and Reis Magos.
