Ponta do Sol
On the south coast of Madeira, Ponta do Sol is where the sun shines longest, which is a clear advantage for a place with beautiful beaches. Highlights include Praia dos Anjos, Canhas, Praia da Lagoa, Lugar de Baixo, Praia da Madalena do Mar and the coastal area of Ponta do Sol.
For nature lovers and people who like going on walks, this location is a little paradise, thanks to its rich heritage, including the site of Moledos, Madalena do Mar, which is part of the Natura 2000 network.
These walks are, in fact, a major attraction of this sunny place. Highlights include routes along Moinho, Nova da Lombada, Nova dos Canhas and Bica da Cana.
Ponta do Sol in Paul da Serra is also the only plateau in Madeira, at an altitude of 1500 metres. It has indigenous vegetation and varied wildlife, and migratory birds. There are wind turbines which produce clean electrical energy.
It is economically well placed in the primary sector; primarily in agriculture, horticulture, and floriculture. Ponta do Sol also has other commercial activity in the form of hotels and restaurants. It is a welcoming land where you can visit the pier, Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo, the Subtropical Floriculture Centre, the magnificent palace of Lugar de Baixo or Zinos, and beautiful parish church. The municipality is divided into the parishes of Ponta do Sol, Madalena do Mar, and Canhas.
