Santana
Santana is located in the north of Madeira. It is a municipality filled with wonderful attractions. It hosts fabulous views and fantastic walking trails. It is a land of great food and the Laurel forest (the municipality is considered by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve). Santana also holds various cultural infrastructures. Among them the Vine and Wine Museum in Arco de São Jorge, a theme park and of course the famous ' Santana Houses' famed for their unique shape and thatched roofs.
From this municipality, one can start beautiful walks that will lead to varying points: Queimadas, Pico Ruivo and Pico das Pedras at an altitude of 1861 meters. It is also here where you will find the fantastic Furão Manor House, surrounded by vineyards on the top of a cliff and with a superb view of the untamed North Sea.
Although it is one of the most important tourist areas of the island, Santana survives mainly from agriculture and homemade crafts. The spectacular mountainous landscapes provide the backdrop image of their municipality badge’s logo.
Additional areas worth visiting in this municipality include the Rocha do Navio, the Faial Fort and Foz da Ribeira (where you can find a Go Karting track and a Lido), the Lighthouse of São Jorge, the Trout Farm in Ribeiro Frio and a beautiful Rose Garden at the Arco Manor House.
Finally an event not to miss is the ‘48 Hours of Dancing Festival’. This event takes place every year in July and is one of the most famous folklaw festivals on the island.
